Formed for cultural and educational purposes in 1996, the Arts and Humanities Foundation was approved for 501C3 status by the United States IRS on March 17, 1997, and received its Charter as a Minnesota Corporation on April 24, 1997.  It acts as an operating foundation, initiating and directing its own programs.

The Foundation does not make grants to individuals or provide funding to other organizations, nor does it solicit financial support from its constituents or the public. It has thus far run its programs from the proceeds of a founding bequest and an anonymous individual gift. The Foundation pays no salaries, stipends, or benefits, and relies on volunteer work and cooperation.
